Mr Robertson picked up his first paint brush when he was 15 years old and has worked on projects which are part of Sydney’s landscape, including the Queen Victoria Building and Sydney Town Hall. He had his heart set on leaving school, but his father refused unless he got an apprenticeship in the building industry. Without arguing, Mr Robertson got his apprenticeship. He started his own painting and decorating business when he was 23 and has been self-employed ever since. He is now the successful owner of Robertson’s Painting and Decorating, in Drummoyne. He collected the customer service award and the multi-unit residential repaint award at the recent Master Painters Association industry awards. ‘‘One of the best reasons for winning is that it was judged by our peers who work in the industry. To be recognised as having the best customer service in NSW was excellent,’’ Mr Robertson said. His business was also a finalist in difficult access and best presented entry categories. Mr Robertson credited the wins to ‘‘the professionalism and commitment of our tradespeople and office staff’’. Last year the business won the Inner West Business Award for outstanding service and trade and it has been invited to Les Robertson owns an award-winning painting and decorating business in Drummoyne. Robertson’s Painting and Decorating has more than 35 years’ experience and most of its 43 painters have been with the company from the beginning. Mr Robertson said the best job the company ever did was a million dollar paint job on the Sydney Town Hall. ‘‘We did gold leafing, marbling affects and premium quality finishes on all the surfaces,’’ he said. Mr Robertson put down his brushes, spray guns and rollers 20 years ago to focus on the sales and administration side of the business. He says that, with some of the best painters in the business, he is looking forward to winning the Trades and Services category at this year’s Inner West Business Awards.
