The 16 and 24 storey towers will have 208 apartments and be built on Australia Ave to the southeast of Olympic Park Railway Station. The builders, Multiplex and Babcock and Brown, are also proposing to add another three residential buildings which will provide up to 673 units in the park. The first development is made up of one, two and three-bedroom apartments, retail shops, a childcare centre and 283 car parking spaces. Planning Minister Frank Sartor said in Parliament recently that Sydney Olympic Park had grown from a ''degraded waste- land and abattoir site'' to the ''fastest growing sub-region in Sydney''. ''It's a red hot precinct which is fulfilling its promise as a key growth centre identified in the metropolitan strategy,'' he said. ''It still attracts Olympic pilgrims with visitor numbers soaring to an expected 10 million a year by 2010. ''Under the Government's vision the park will grow to house around 20,000 workers, 15,000 residents and thousands of students. ''Another 55,000 residents will move into the wider sub-region over the next 20 years including nearby Homebush Bay West, Rhodes Peninsula and the Olympic Village precinct.'' Mr Sartor said the Government was working on a new masterplan for the site which would include a sports and educat- ion campus and possibly a school. The Government has approved more than $1 billion in construction projects at the park since the 2000 Olympic Games, including an 18-storey Sofitel Hotel under construction and soon to be built Formule 1 hotel. ''All of these proposals will help to create an attractive and liveable precinct which will become a significant residential, com- mercial and recreational hub for western Sydney,'' he said.
