INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, June 26, 2008 9 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Mayors all disappointed FRANK Sartor may have been dancing in the streets after his planning laws finally passed through State Parliament, but mayors in the Inner West were bitterly disappointed and fearful for the future of the suburbs they have fought so hard to protect. Ashfield mayor Ted Cassidy said his immediate reaction was that it would be ''a disaster for local government''. He said it would take away rights from communities. Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said: ''The new laws are draconian, undemocratic and com- munities will have less input in what gets built in their area.'' Strathfield mayor Paul Barron said, ''I'm extremely disappointed. The State Government has passed a law that has been widely opposed by local government and citizens and it has stripped councils of funding for essential services. Developers have a lot more scope to do what they want and any complaints should now be for- warded to Strathfield State Labor MP Virginia Judge because they are her concern now.'' Burwood Mayor John Faker was also very disappointed the Bill passed through the Upper House. ''I hope they reconsider the issue in regards to compliant develop- ment,'' he said. ''There is a proper process to be followed and people still need to have their say. It is outrageous that there could be a development happening next door to someone and they don't get to have their opinion heard.'' Sartor gets his law KIM SHAW State Planning Minister Frank Sartor has asked local government to work with him on new planning laws. CONTROVERSIAL planning laws were passed by the Legislative Council at 1.35am on Wednesday morning by one vote. The two Christian Democrats split on the issue with Fred Nile MLC voting with the Government along with the two Shooters Party MLCs. The Local Government and Shires Association said the laws were driven by developers not by the wider community. Greens MLC Sylvia Hale called the laws ''a reward to big developers for all the money they poured into the NSW ALPs cam- paign coffers before the last elec- tion''. Planning Minister Frank Sartor said the laws aimed to cut red tape for ordinary homeowners and ''small businesses''. He asked local government, which has vociferously oppose the changes, to work with the state in implementing the laws. The laws sparked widespread fears over heritage and environ- ment protections and drew criti- cism for watering down com- munity rights to be heard on development impacts. The Greens tried to move 94 amendments to protect appeal rights and increase environment and heritage protections, but their changes were defeated when the Opposition voted with the Labor Party against them. Opposition spokesman for plan- ning Brad Hazzard MP said no community in NSW was safe after these changes. ''It's a recipe for community conflict: Neighbour will be pitted against neighbour,'' Mr Hazzard said. ''To wake up in the morning and find a demolition going on next door or new building being built without notification or input is pathetic. Some councils are too slow and State Government de- partments are amongst the biggest sinners.'' President of the LGSA Genia McCaffery said the strong com- munity campaign had been worth it by forcing a Government back- down on making private certifiers more accountable and reinstating council rights to fund regional facilities with developer levies.
