INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, June 26, 2008 13 SAVING THE PLANET Pupils dig in to create a bush garden project at Concord West Public School. Students go bush STUDENTS at Concord West Public School can now enjoy a native bush garden project, thanks to the Nestle´ Community Environ- ment Program. A habitat for native fauna will be created with the species indigenous to the area with help from Nestle´ , school students and volunteering teachers and parents. The bush garden project will enhance student experiences by offering an interactive natural space for Concord West's 300 students to play and learn. The funding will also provide a rainwater tank, which will supply water for the plants and bird-life. The project started this month with weeding and clearing of the area. School students and Nestle´ staff will take part in a series of plantings days in July. Nestle´ Corporate and External Relations director, Peter Kelly said the bush garden project would give school students a valu- able opportunity to learn about wildlife and plant species common to their area. ''Being actively involved in planting fauna and establishing natural habitats, students will become aware of the part they can play in helping to protect their local environment now and in the future,'' Mr Kelly said. ''All the trees to be planted are native species that, when established, will improve the ecological integrity of the area by providing much needed shelter and food for native birds and animals.'' School principal, Cathy Brennan said: ''We're really grateful for Nestle´ 's support in making this fantastic project possible.'' ''It will provide teachers with a landscape where they can teach our children about indigenous species of plants and animals and environmental issues including land care and sustainable environments.''
