Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : June 25 2008
14 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, June 26, 2008 NEWS Centre stage for young maestros FIONA BRADY Xenia Deviatkina-Loh Hyung Suk Bae TWO teenage musicians from the Inner West are tuning up for the perform- ance of their young lives. Xenia Deviatkina-Loh, from Burwood, plays violin and Enfield's Hyung Suk Bae plays the violincello. They beat more than 100 talented youngsters to reach the finals of the NSW Secondary Schools Con- certo Competition. On Saturday they and the other seven finalists will take centre stage and per- form a concerto with full orchestral backing from the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra. Xenia started playing the violin at the age of 6 and was a finalist in the junior sec- tion of the competition in 2004. For this contest she will play Pablo Sarasate's Car- men Fantasy. ''Carmen is a piece that I find very suitable for my personality and character -- the freedom and the gypsy sense,'' she said. ''I love playing the piece, and I love the piece.'' Fellow Inner West com- petitor Hyung Suk was born in Korea and began playing the cello at the age of 5. He won many awards in his homeland before his family moved to Australia in 2007. The year 11 student at the Sydney Conservatorium High School will play Dvorak's Cello Concerto in B minor, Opus 104. ''When I was 14, I first heard Dvorak's concerto Op. 104 B minor by chance and was fascinated by the music immediately,'' he said. ''I particularly loved the sound of the horn which creates such good harmony with the other instruments in the orchestral introduc- tion.'' The finals will take place this Saturday at 8pm at the Gillian Moore Centre for Performing Arts at PLC Pymble.
