Picture: BRENT MCGILVARY ~pP157095. MODIFIED RESTRICTIONS ¦ Hand-held hosing of lawns and gardens and drip irrigation is allowed only on Wednesdays and Sundays before 10am and after 4pm ¦ Hosing of vehicles at residential premises is permitted only with a trigger nozzle or high-pressure water-cleaning equipment ¦ Hosing residential building struc- tures including windows, walls and gutters allowed, using a hose with a trigger nozzle or high-pressure water-cleaning equipment ¦ No hosing of hard surfaces such as paths or driveways ¦ No other watering systems or sprinklers are to be used at any time ¦ A permit from Sydney Water is required to fill new or renovated pools bigger than 10,000 litres ¦ No hoses or taps to be left running unattended, except when filling pools or containers ¦ Fire hoses must only be used for firefighting purposes, not for clean- ing SYDNEY residents are now al- lowed to wash their cars with a hose fitted with a trigger nozzle, but other stage three water restrictions will remain. NSW Water Minister Nathan Rees made the announcement on Thursday, June 19, at a home in Mina Rosa St, Enfield, which uses water from rainwater tanks to wash cars and water gardens. ‘‘Last year we said that when dam levels were consistently between 65 and 70 per cent and there was a forecast of more rain, we would look at easing restrictions,’’ Mr Rees said. ‘‘Sydneysiders have saved more than 415 billion litres of water since restrictions were introduced in October 2003. ‘‘Recent rainfall has kept dam levels consistently above 65 per cent, and it’s now time to re- ward families by relaxing some of the restrictions.’’ Washing vehicles, boats, cara- vans, trucks, trailers and other vehicles and homes is now per- mitted, but only with a trigger nozzle. Tests by Sydney Water found that using a hose with a trigger nozzle instead of a regular hose saved water. A trigger nozzle stops the water flow when the hose is not in use, saving about 20 per cent of water on an average car wash at home. ‘‘Sydney Water estimates that the new measures will increase water consumption by less than a half of one per cent a year,’’ Mr Rees said. ‘‘Sydney’s water consumption will still be at least 15 per cent less than the 10-year average and will remain at the lowest levels since the late 1960s,’’ he said. Motorists struggling with high petrol prices would save money by not having to go to car washes. Strathfield State Labor MP Virginia Judge said she had been approached by many people who found washing their cars with a bucket a difficult task. ‘‘With the easing of the re- strictions, these people will now be able to take care of their homes and cars without the added expense of car washes and professional cleaners,’’ Ms Judge said.
