Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : June 25 2008
INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, June 26, 2008 37 WRITE TO US MAIL: The Editor Inner-West Weekly, 142 Macquarie St, Parramatta 2150. FAX: 9689 5529 EMAIL: firstname.lastname@example.org Letters should be kept brief. Name, address and phone num- ber must be supplied. Letters are submitted on condition that Cumberland Newspapers, as publisher of the Inner-West Weekly, may edit and has the right to reproduce in electronic form and communicate these letters. CONDITIONS Cr Drury's trolley folly NOW that an election is in the air, Councillor Drury seems to have had a change of heart about the problem of shopping trolleys on our streets (Tackling trolley trash, Inner-West Weekly, May 29.) Cr Drury has failed to mention that Ashfield Council recently convened a shopping trolley working party, of which he was a member. When, at this working party, I asked that supermarkets be requested to introduce a coin- operated system (which works well in Summer Hill and Haberfield) I got NO support from Cr Drury. Cr Drury does not seem to understand that shopping trolleys were never designed to transport shopping outside the confines of shopping centres. Trolleys cannot be controlled on our uneven footpaths, and I have seen them tip over with a child on board. It is not only abandoned trolleys which are dangerous -- even more dangerous is a moving trolley out of control. The fact is that most trolleys are used to move only a couple of small bags, which could easily be carried. Most supermarkets have a home delivery service which can be utilised for large orders. Personal shopping trolleys are already available from the local supermarkets at reasonable prices. As a member of the council's official trolley working party, Cr Drury should know that his options -- such as installation of parking bays for trolleys, signage on trolleys and in shopping centres -- are already part of council's draft policy; perhaps he should read it. Abandoned trolleys lie uncollected in our streets for days. They are unsightly and an environmental problem as well as a traffic hazard, and they are dangerous -- let's get them off our streets. Caroline Stott Deputy mayor, Ashfield Council School bridge a white elephant IT is hoped that the proposed overhead bridge on Parramatta Rd, Haberfield, will be a better investment of taxpayer dollars than the bridge Strathfield State Labor MP Virginia Judge felt was required for the safe crossing of school students in The Boulevarde, Strathfield. This bridge is rarely used by the students (or anybody else for that matter) and has proven to be an absolute white elephant as the students continue to rely on the traffic lights adjacent to cross The Boulevarde. This money could have been better spent on the roads in this area, many of which are in an abysmal state of disrepair, particularly Wentworth Rd. Marian Jager Burwood Time to see see the light ... rail I AM concerned that the group known as Friends of Greater Sydney appears to be earmarking the disused freight line next to the Summer Hill flour mills for a surface motorway connected to toll roads in Sydney's south. The group includes members such as Bovis Lend Lease, Caltex, Macquarie Infrastructure, RTA and Planning NSW. Friends of the GreenWay and Eco Transit suggest that the Summer Hill goods line could provide an extension for light rail from Lilyfield to Dulwich Hill., The GreenWay corridor must be expanded for walkers, cyclists and wildlife and not be used as a magnet for trucks. I understand that the Sustainable Transport Policy endorsed at The Nature Conservation Council of NSW's Annual Conference, October 2002, stated that ''The CBD public transport must be improved by the construction of the CBD light rail extension before the cross-city tunnel. ''The feasibility study of light rail extension to Ashfield must be completed. ''Promotion of light rail as transport in other parts of inner Sydney, including the Bay Light Express proposal, must be a priority over road capacity increases.'' The State Government could also take this opportunity to extend light rail services, including into the Balmain peninsula where a large catchment of public transport users are tired of watching already-full buses pass them by. Any expansion of the M4 tollway and Port Botany motorway in our municipality will turn Croydon, Ashfield and Summer Hill into suburbs poisoned by unfiltered emissions from the M4 East motorway tunnel's vehicle exhaust vents and make our villages congested with traffic. Motorways add more vehicles onto the inner city roads. What major road in any OECD country is congestion-free? We want environmentally sustainable, liveable Inner West villages, with light rail and a useable GreenWay corridor from Lilyfield to Dulwich Hill, not polluting monster motorways.
