Picture: BRENT McGILVARY ~PP160970 Festive fervour THE fifth annual Chinese Cultural Festival was launched last Thursday, declaring Sunday, August 10, a day of grand art and cultural shows for Ashfield. The festival's organising committee president, Peak Lu, said the event would be held over two days, with a private party on Friday, August 8, and a street party on Sunday, August 10. ''The fifth festival aims to offer its audience a great variety of performances to promote and carry forward the Chinese traditional cultural folk arts and Sydney folk arts alike,'' he said. The Australian Federation of Chinese Organisations is running the event to coincide with the Beijing Olympics and will celebrate the opening ceremony on the Friday night. Sunday will see performances by Chinese groups and schools from the area, and will feature a photographic exhibition, art and stalls. ''By promoting the 5000-year-old Chinese culture and exhibiting the development of China's civilisation and booming economy, it is time for Australia and the whole world together to feel and witness the great achievements made through the Chinese harmonious society,'' Mr Peak said.
