Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : July 2 2008
48 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, July 3, 2008 Inner-West Weekly Sport Wark's in State side Catherine Wark, in action for Glebe, is representing NSW. CATHERINE Wark begins her trip to Tasmania for the NSW under-21 hockey team after a testing off- season that saw her doubtful to make the side. The state side, with players chosen from across NSW, made their way down south on Sunday, to take on the best young hockey players throughout Australia. Wark, of Five Dock, had a summer of illness. She suffered from what was suspected to be glandular fever but turned out to be gluten intolerance. She ended the 2007 season on a high note, after winning the best under-18 Women's Player at the NSW Hockey Awards, although the highs didn't last. Trying out for the under-21 side meant the 19-year-old went up against older competitors and had to get back to her peak fitness. ''Being sick was more frustrat- ing than anything. I knew I had to keep my fitness up to prove to selectors that I was up to playing for the state and I couldn't do that until I was completely well,'' Wark said. She spends most of her time coaching her under-15 junior team and playing in the Glebe first grade women's side. Wark has headed up the first grade defens- ive effort this year as fullback. ''The Glebe girls have really proven themselves in the past couple of weeks with some gusty wins,'' Wark said. ''The wins have really sent me off to the State Championships on a high note.'' Wark's coach Colin Rochester believes her strengths lay in her patience and ability to anticipate the play. ''Catherine is a strong player who can read the play very well. I believe her ability to read and control the play is why selectors have picked her for the state side,'' Rochester said. Wark, who was a part of the winning under-18 state side last year, will take on arch rivals Queensland and talented WA in the under-21 State Championship.
