INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, July 10, 2008 5 WORLD YOUTH DAY www.innerwestweekly.com.au Ready to welcome pilgrims FIONA BRADY Left: Students Lauren Whitby, Ashleigh Mills, and Chiara Kim in the chapel at Bethlehem College, which is hosting 460 pilgrims. Main picture: ALEX WISSER PP164162 ''WE'RE hoping the Pope visits us here in Five Dock,'' Father Bob Hayes of All Hallows Church joked last week as he oversaw final preparations for World Youth Day. From Monday, the Inner West parish will be busy providing bed and board for 500 visitors from overseas, mostly Italians. While 200 will be staying in parishioner's homes, a further 270 will bunk down in the local school. ''It's going to be like the United Nations around here,'' Father Hayes said. Like many Inner west parishes, All Hallows' World Youth Day committee has been meeting for months and has mustered a team of volunteers to help with tasks such as catering and cleaning. It's a similar story over in Ashfield's Bethlehem College which has 470 pilgrims staying under its roof. Furniture has been moved out of classrooms, extra smoke alarms and temporary showers have been installed, and thousands of packets of food have been de- livered to feed the visitors. School spokeswoman Jo Condon said they had done everything possible to make the pilgrims comfortable. ''It's drawn the whole com- munity together,'' she said. ''Parishioners have been great, they've been donating warm clothes so the pilgrims won't be cold. ''Everyone wants to show hos- pitality to the visitors.'' Year 12 student Chiara Kim said she and her fellow students were ''really excited''. ''Even though it's in the middle of study preparation, most of us will be going to World Youth Day,'' she said. Ashfield has one of the biggest allocations of pilgrims in the In- ner West. De La Salle College will also host 400 young visitors, with 300 staying more in St Vincent's School and parish hall. australia's innovative university DO YOU SUFFER FROM HIP PAIN?
