6 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, July 10, 2008 WORLD YOUTH DAY www.innerwestweekly.com.au Cross on the road again The World Youth Day cross arrives in Strathfield Park on Monday. Buy these pictures: phone 1300 301 705. Pictures: BRENT McGILVARY ON day seven of its 15-day journey, the World Youth Day cross made its way to the Inner West this week. On Monday, the ''Olympic Torch'' of World Youth Day -- the 3.8m cross -- was paraded in Strathfield and Homebush. The cross, together with an icon of the Virgin Mary and a message stick from the indigen- ous community, was led through the streets by four members of the journey of the cross and icon travelling team, including WYD08 co-ordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher. The party was welcomed at Strathfield Park by Mayor Paul Barron before the cross made its way to Homebush where it remained overnight at the Sem- inary of the Good Shepherd. The World Youth Day 15-day walk began in Wollongong on July 1, and will end in Darling Harbour with a procession into the opening mass, celebrated by Cardinal George Pell next Tuesday. BRIEFLY Undercover workers WE don't know whether they're ''holey'' or not but this local snippet about nuns' undies caught our eye. In its weekly bulletin, one parish has been appealing for volunteers to wash the ''delicates and undergarments'' of some visiting nuns. Apparently there are no washing machines where the sisters are staying and obviously with cleanliness being next to Godliness, a roster of volunteers is needed. ''There are 48 nuns and many hands make light work,'' the notice says. College welcome THE Dominican Sisters of Eastern Australia and the Solomon Islands are hosting a ''Dominican welcome'' at Santa Sabina College in Strathfield for Dominican youth pilgrims. Fundraisers enabled 24 pilgrims to travel from South Africa, the Solomon Islands and East Timor to WYD. The visitors will join 200 students, staff and former students from Australian Dominican schools on July 13 and 14. In the spirit THE Australian Catholic University will host SpiritAliveFest at its Strathfield campus on Wednesday. An official WYD event, the youth festival will feature theatre, drumming, jugglers, clowns, karaoke and bands. The event is free and all are welcome. ACU National Strathfield campus is located at 25a Barker Rd, Strathfield. For details about the event visit www.acu.edu.au/wyd
