FIONA BRADY KEY FEATURES OF THE PLAN NEW CITY: Nine distinct precincts, including Central which is intended as the heart of the new town HOMES: 6000 new houses con- structed to house about 14,000 JOBS: More than 28,000 extra jobs SCHOOL: A sports and education campus for over 5000 students EVENTS:The retention of major event capability for up to 250,000 patrons VIEW: It is on public display at Canada Bay and Strathfield councils until August 17 or online at www.sydneyolympicpark.com.au IT started life as an abattoir and brickworks, but Sydney Olympic Park is to undergo another mass- ive transformation in an attempt to finally rid it of the ''white elephant'' tag. Last week Planning Minister Frank Sartor unveiled a dramatic vision of what the park could look like in 2030. But the proposals to boost its residential population from 3000 to 14,000 and its working popu- lation from 6000 to 28,000 are already causing controversy with Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas expressing concern about the impact the population increases will have on surround- ing communities. ''Currently our road networks are choked and travel times are getting worse and unless the gov- ernment seriously looks at tack- ling these issues along with a fairly large injection of capital, I don't think this will be sustainable,'' he said. Mr Sartor said the underused site had ''enormous amounts of potential''. ''Today Sydney Olympic Park is home to more than 60 businesses and 6000 workers and over the past 18 months alone, $276 million worth of projects, ranging from commercial buildings and hotels to a childcare facility, have been approved at the park,'' he said. ''Sydney Olympic Park Draft Master Plan 2030 is an excellent example of planning that balances the needs of major sporting events with those of growing commercial and emerging residential and edu- cation communities.'' The minister promised the park's environmental credentials would be safeguarded during the redevelopment and that new infra- structure would be paid for by developers. However he admitted that issues surrounding the proposed V8 Supercar race would need to be addressed.
