INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, July 17, 2008 15 NEWS Life's a blast at 30 Daniel Mendelow is celebrating 30 years with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. JESSICA CAMPION SYDNEY Symphony Orchestra's principal trum- pet player, Daniel Mendelow, marks his 30th year with the orchestra this month. Despite being gifted at many instruments when he was younger, the Five Dock resident said the trumpet's appeal rang the loudest. ''I was attracted (to the trumpet) because it offered a way to play with others,'' Mendelow said. ''Plus, with the trumpet you feel an empowerment; an empowerment to make a lot of noise and get a lot of attention. I picked it up and thought 'this is going to be fun -- this is me'.'' The New York-born musician, who settled in Five Dock eight years ago, had a long history of musi- cal achievements before he came to Sydney. He was the principal trumpet player with Israel's Jerusalem Symphony Or- chestra, an Israel Philhar- monic Orchestra member and, in 1978, joined the Sydney Symphony Orches- tra. ''In the Philharmonic (Orchestra) tour we landed in Australia and, after two years in the Middle East, it was like a breath of fresh air,'' Mendelow said. ''I loved the feel of the country. Back then Sydney was a bit different to what it is now; not quite as multicultural or cosmopolitan but people treated each other with a lot of respect. I remember thinking 'look at that!' when people actually queued for the bus. In the Middle East . . . it's every man for him- self. Since '78 I really haven't looked back and I'll be with (Sydney Symphony) as long as they'll have me.''
