INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, July 17, 2008 17 NEWS Picture of support Cleopatra by Elizabeth Leacy (left); Family Portraitby Bonnie Colling (above) and Tropical Paradise by Diana Khoury (below). ZILKA GROGAN ELIZABETH Leacy's entry for a local art competition is more than just a simple drawing. The design reflects Ms Leacy's long struggle with epilepsy and the support she's received from her best friend, her dog Cleopatra. Ms Leacy has won the FRANS Create-a- card competition. The 40-year-old has suffered from seizures since contracting meningitis at the age of 6. At 19, she moved out of home but suffered hypoxic brain damage which left her with chronic epilepsy. Ms Leacy's mother, Carmel Leacy, said Cleopatra had become a guardian for her daughter. ''Doctors suggested a pet could become very helpful in Liz's recovery,'' she said. ''So Liz got Cleopatra at 6 weeks old. The two bonded, and 14 years later they are positively inseparable.'' FRANS provides support for people with disabilities living in the Inner West. Ms Leacy and seven other winners have now had their designs printed as greeting cards. A packet of 16 cards costs $20. Call 9799 4333 or visit www.frans.com.au to place an order.
