28 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, July 17, 2008 Council to blame REGARDING Streetview -- Foun- dation of Discontent (IWW, July 3): I cannot understand why Cr John Faker is outraged as Burwood Council was rather weak-kneed about Frank Sartor taking over the planning/ap- proval of Burwood CBD, due to conflict of interest by some coun- cillors. What difference will two or three storeys make to an already excessively tall building? When completed, Burwood CBD will be an eyesore. Included will be an incomplete station unable to cope with a steep increase in passen- gers and without lifts, a public school with portable classrooms and frequent traffic chaos. Cr Faker and the other council- lors will have to take most of the responsibility for that mess. Peter Jager Burwood All to benefit With airlines soon to take deliv- ery of shiny new-generation super jumbo aircraft and doub- ling capacity, the perfect oppor- tunity exists to extend curfews to reasonable hours, say 10pm to 8 or 9am. It's time that everyone benefited from new technology not just passengers, airline executives and shareholders. Airline movement generally peaks when our roads and trans- port infrastructure are creaking, and otherwise spread thinly and unevenly over daylight hours. Rather than fill these gaps, air- lines only demand curfews be lifted to increase frivolous de- mand and extend profits. R Piech Enfield D'Amore's outburst welcome DRUMMOYNE State Labor MP Angela D'Amore can rattle off a long string of reasons why she is happy to speak out against her own party. She says she is not greedy when she makes her demands on her Government -- she prioritises like any good business person would when it comes to determining who gets what in the capital expenditure department. She says she tells her constituents not be greedy either, but that she understands they pay a lot of money in taxes and expect a bigger bang for their collective buck. Ms D'Amore is equally always happy to announce when the Government does something to benefit her electorate. But she says she expects more. And she's not happy with the answers she is given when she questions the powerbrokers in Macquarie St. There is probably more to the picture behind why she and other backbenchers and their party colleagues in Sussex St have broken ranks. And yes, she can spin it like the best them. But you have to give her one thing. She's put Drummoyne on the map again. How embarrassing Strathfield councillors Scott Farlow and Paul Barron. I WAS amazed at the conduct of the Strathfield Council when I visited last week over the Strathfield South library debacle. What met me was akin to a Mad Hatter's Tea Party. There was scant regard of the feelings of the residents at the meeting, but that was nothing compared to what happened for the remainder of the time. Cr Scott Farlow was abusing other councillors like a screaming banshee. Added to this was Mayor Paul Barron threatening people by say- ing he was going to personally sue them and finally voting on a motion that directly involved him- self. What a night! What an embar- rassment for the community! Matthew Blackmore Strathfield South Right to know REGARDING Julian Rice (How Pathetic, Opinion July 10): What a shame reporters were not at the last Strathfield Council meeting. Residents have the right to know how their councillors are behav- ing and what they are getting away with. I was shocked to see and hear the embarrassing way the council meeting was held. We had Cr Farlow screaming at other councillors while stretched out over the table to try and abuse them. We all just sat there with our mouths open. To follow up such a disgusting attack, the Mayor Paul Barron started accusing people of all sorts of things and threatening to sue them. Then he started shouting that he was going to take people to ICAC. To top it off the Mayor then voted on an urgency motion which asked for the investigation of his alleged use of council property without the sanction of the coun- cil: a clear breach of the council rules. Robert Brett Croydon Park Despicable I HAVE to wonder why I pay my rates. Sometimes, as was demon- strated by Strathfield Council in the last meeting, it appears that my rates are to pay over-inflated egos hell-bent on getting their own way, becoming aggressive, oppro- brious, offensive, petulant and insulting when things don't exactly happen as they want. With Cr Farlow yelling, attempt- ing to loom and trying to frighten others, with Mayor Barron's threats to sue! One tip, if there is a conflict of interest, the person with the conflict should leave the room. Despicable.
