Your skin is the front line when it comes to the effect of the environment and the weather. It keeps the good stuff in and the bad stuff out during a lifetime of hard wear and, hopefully, not too much tear. But with the cooler weather of winter, your skin often responds by losing moisture. Sometimes considered the mirror to your inner health, there are a number of ways to keep this most important organ in tip-top condition. Affected by what we eat and with an appetite all of its own, your skin has distinct dietary preferences and in the dryness that often accompanies that drop in temperature, a plentiful supply of essential fatty acids (EFAs) is on the menu. Found in nuts and seeds as well as soybeans, walnuts, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, avocados and oily fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines, EFAs are the "good fats" that help maintain the condition of your skin, support thyroid and adrenal activity -- which plays a role in immunity -- and contribute to healthy blood and arteries. EFAs are sensitive to high heat, light and oxygen, so raw is always better than cooked. While you're sprinkling flax oils and nuts on your salad and learning to love the green leafy vegies you've been avoiding since you were a kid, there are a few more things that will help keep your skin looking good. Even if it's cooler, keep drinking plenty of water to keep your skin well hydrated. Switch to a lighter, milder cleanser but use a richer, heavier moisturiser, especially at night. While you're slathering your face, don't forget the rest of you, including your elbows, knees and heels -- you don't want to emerge from winter and don your spring finery only to realise you resemble a crocodile-skin handbag. Don't forget moisturising masks and scrubs and, if you've got a sweet tooth but a limited budget, you can use sugar as an exfoliant and cleanser -- it's gentle and less dehydrating than many commercial scrubs. Just be sure to rinse it off thoroughly or you may become irresistibly attractive to swarms of insects, which probably wasn't the look you were after. "Affected by what we eat and with an appetite all of its own, your skin has distinct dietary preferences" W face up TO IT lpfu tips Raw sources of ESAs are better than cooked. Instead of margarine or butter on hot vegetables, serve them warm and drizzle with flaxseed or olive oil. Buy your oils cold pressed and keep the flaxseed oil in the fridge. Ground flaxseeds can be sprinkled over salads and vegies. The whole seeds tend to pass undigested through the system without delivering their benefit. Instead of biscuits and cake, snack on nuts and seeds. Add some flaxseed meal to your favourite pancake or cake mix. 2071877K IWW Put your feet in our hands INTERGRATED SPINE & SPORTS THERAPIES sports lab Suite 7, 159-167 Victoria Road, DRUMMOYNE ph: 9819 7800 Childrens foot/leg problems Adult/Sporting injuries Foot/Knee/Hip/Lower back pain Custom orthotic and insole therapy Adjusting other old or uncomfortable orthotics General nail and skin maintenance Integrated Podiatry, Chiropractic, Physiotherapy management Do you suffer back or neck pain?
