More often than not, these readers want to know "what to say" to recruiters and employers when they attend job interviews as if there is something wrong with them. The answer is to say you were retrenched and then clearly articulate the business reason behind the move. You don't have to go into a lot of detail. Redundancy occurs when an employer decides a particular job role is no longer required. One of the readers who emailed me was retrenched after her department was closed, another due to his employer losing a major long--term client and a third when two companies merged. In that last case, the company didn't need two people doing the same role and the larger company nominated its staff member to keep the role. In that case, the reader was offered another job but it was a more junior role so she and her employer parted company on good terms. While it doesn't always feel too good, there is nothing shameful in being made redundant. Some people long to be made redundant so they can take the money and head off in a new direction.
