INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, July 24, 2008 5 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Played with a Passion VICTORIA ZIARKOWSKI Alfio Stuto is put up on the cross during the stations of the cross at Barangaroo. Picture: RENEE NOWYTARGER ~NN431393 We lived it, because it's real, it's true, ask the pilgrims' ' ALFIO STUTO who played Jesus ALL eyes were on Alfio Stuto when he played the role of Jesus before the Pope and a huge global audience last Friday. As many as 500,000 onlookers and a further 500 million tele- vision viewers watched the re- enactment of Jesus's final hours. Mr Stuto, of Homebush West, said he willingly put his hand up for an acting role in the Stations of the Cross re-enactment for World Youth Day 2008. ''I didn't have a particular role in mind,'' Mr Stuto said. When he learned he'd portray Jesus, he was overcome. ''I was just paralysed, I was in tears, literally,'' he said. He later said it was a rollercoaster ride and that there were two sides to his performance. ''You know all these people are watching . . . and you know you are able to touch all those people,'' he said. ''But I blocked these out completely, to me they didn't exist.'' Mr Stuto stayed focused and thought about his faith. ''I was thinking about Christ, what the Son of Man would have anticipated,'' he said. Just like for all those watching, 2000 years ago Jesus also knew what was coming next, he said. ''We lived it, because it's real, it's true, ask the pilgrims,'' he said. He said even non-Christians he'd spoken to said they were moved. ''What does that tell you?'' he said. Mr Stuto also came close to Pope Benedict XVI. ''I was blessed to be very close to his holiness,'' he said. ''He provided us, through his words, a sense of hope and a sense of unity.'' Mr Stuto says now that it's all over, it's back to work. Residents might vote for mayor SHIREEN KHALIL BURWOOD residents will elect their own mayor in 2012, provid- ing a constitutional referendum to be held in September succeeds. Mayor John Faker's proposal was considered at this week's council meeting -- and the other councillors agreed to put it to the vote of the people. The referendum for a popularly elected mayor will be held in conjunction with the September 13 local government elections. Cr Faker said there were many reasons why Burwood was ready for a popularly elected mayor. ''It provides continuity for a four-year period,'' he said. ''It's also very disruptive to hold mayoral elections every year and there's significant pressure on councillors to support a candi- date.'' He said a long-term mayor could carry out specific programs in those four years. ''While the Burwood com- munity is becoming more in- volved and more proactive in how things happen at council, resi- dents will appreciate the chance to directly decide who will be representing them as mayor when they go to vote,'' he said. Cr Faker said the number of councillors did not need to be increased. If the referendum is carried by a majority of ''yes'' votes, six councillors and one popularly elected mayor would form council in September 2012.
