Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : July 30 2008
INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, July 31, 2008 25 STREETVIEW Worth the trip for work Paolo Fiorini Kenneth Gardner Melina Arcuri Geoff Lavender Sandra Alosi After openly criticising Premier Morris Iemma, Drummoyne Labor MP Angela D'Amore is travelling to Malaysia later this month, at her own expense. We asked readers in Five Dock if politicians should take taxpayer-funded overseas trips or could they be doing more in the local community? Paolo Fiorini, of Five Dock: It's a very tricky question, because it depends what she's going for. If she's going there for a good reason, we should pay. But if she goes there on a trip, I should go. She's very popular. She seems to be doing enough around here. Kenneth Gardner, of Russell Lea: It all depends what it is. If they're just going to go overseas for a junket, I'm against it. They should pay for their own holidays. If it's going to benefit the community, I don't mind. They'll come back with better plans. I'm sick and tired of this government. It's a disgrace. We have a bunch of politicians, a so-called government, who don't govern. They're a complete and utter shambles. They're got no planning whatsoever. It's all on the run. Melina Arcuri, Haberfield: I personally don't think it's very fair. What do we get? They should use their own funds. It can be unfair how many politicians go overseas at once. I don't have anything against her. If someone has a problem, you can approach her. She will help. Geoff Lavender, of Canada Bay: I think they should put some restrictions on that. I feel that sometimes they go for a bit of a holiday. I don't think most people mind if they're actually working over there. Most businesses need to prove their expendi- tures, why shouldn't politicians? Some- times I think some are very hardworking. But some people say no, she (Ms D'Amore) doesn't work as hard as perhaps she could. Sandra Alosi, of Concord: I can't see why not, if it's work-related. I always see her in the paper. She's always involved especially with older people and childcare schemes, parks, road, stuff like that. OPINION
