48 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, July 31, 2008 Emma Sprouster is a speed demon at road racing. Picture: BRENT McGILVARY ~PP171773 Family focus on cycling JUNIOR SPORTS STAR ZILKA GROGAN EMMA Sprouster's passion for cycling has become a true family affair. The 16-year-old's mum Robyn is the secretary of her local club, the Lidcombe-Auburn Cycling Club. Her dad Brian regularly joins Emma on her rides, although she admits he has tried, and failed, to beat her on the bike. ''It's very much the centrepoint of our lives at the moment,'' she said. Emma's extensive list of cycling achievements in the under-17s this year include first place in the Goulburn Tour, two road race stage wins in the Tamworth Tour and fourth place at the Canberra Tour Criterium, an international event. She represented NSW in the state team last year and is hoping to make the team again this year. She is currently placed second in the state. Tim Dekker, from the NSW Institute of Sport, developed Emma's current training program, which requires coach Gay Chandler to train with Emma six days a week, covering 250km to 300km. Emma, who lives with her parents at Newington and attends MLC in Burwood, prefers road racing to track. She is quick to cite Sarah Carrigan as one of her role models. ''I hope one day when I'm at that level I can be an inspiration to people my age,'' she said. Emma has been nominated for the Inner-West Weekly Junior Sports Star of the Year award. The Inner-West Weekly is offer- ing two awards this year. Our Junior Sports Star of the Year will receive a medal and $1000 prizemoney. Other published nominees will then be in the running for the young achiever award. He or she will receive a medal and $500. All of the winners from 21 Cumberland and Courier News- papers' publications will be in contention for the Cumberland Medal as the overall winner.
