Lodger not guilty of murder bid STEPHEN RYAN court reporter A MAN who attacked a seven- year-old boy with an axe as well as stabbing the child's mother has been found not guilty of attempted murder on the grounds of mental illness. Judge Roy Ellis ruled that Kyung Keun Son, 48, was suffer- ing paranoid illusions and audi- tory hallucinations when he struck the boy in the head with an axe at Strathfield in July 2006. Son had been living with the boy's family for about four months when he was asked to find alternative accommo- dation. He agreed to move, but on July 6, 2006, the child's mother heard Son arguing with her children in the backyard. Judge Ellis found that Son picked up the boy, turned him upside down and threw him headfirst on to concrete twice. Son then ran inside, grabbed a steak knife and stabbed the mother seven times in the neck. She was able to escape and get help by stopping a bus outside the home. In the meantime Son ran inside, retrieved an axe and struck the boy's head. ''(The boy) would have died without urgent medical atten- tion,'' Judge Ellis said. Both the mother and son survived while Son fled and was arrested near the home two days later. He was found unfit to plead to charges of wounding and caus- ing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder, but a special hearing was conducted at Parra- matta District Court to examine the case against him. Judge Ellis found last week that Son did carry out the acts as described by the victims, but returned verdicts of not guilty on the grounds of mental ill- ness. Son was referred to the Men- tal Health Review Tribunal and remanded to Long Bay prison hospital. Save up to $830 on hot water. * # Conditions apply.
