Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : August 13 2008
INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, August 14, 2008 3 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Lucky eights good as Olympic gold Baby Alaina Ray Ho, born on the luckiest day on the Chinese calendar, with mother Justine (above) and David Phoutasak Sengchansavang and Won Sook Choi during the marriage service on Friday. Main Picture: Troy Bendeich. Small Picture: Kim Don SHIREEN KHALIL IT'S not an Olympic sport but has definitely been an Olympic marriage marathon. The 8th of the 8th of 2008 was the luckiest day on the Chinese calendar with more than 95 couples in NSW, including Ashfield couple David Phoutasak Sengchansavang and (Sue) Won Sook Choi, saying ''I do''. The day was especially lucky for baby Alaina Ray Ho, born on Friday at 6.52am. Her parents Justine Ray and Andy Ho, of Strathfield, believe she will be blessed and have good luck. The number eight is very lucky in many Asian cultures, as the Chinese word for eight sounds similar to the word meaning prosper or wealth. In keeping the tradition of luck David and Sue tied the knot at exactly 18 minutes past 8am. ''I chose the date because I always liked the number eight and it means wealth and pros- perity,'' David said. Sue said her family didn't know her mother-in- law had booked that special date. ''She didn't want us to miss out on the lucky day,'' Sue said. Sue, who is of Korean background, met her Laotian husband David two years ago and the pair couldn't have asked for a more perfect wedding day. They were pronounced husband and wife in front of families and friends at David's grand- mother's house in West Hoxton, followed by Laotian festivities, including a traditional Buddhist ceremony. Truck tunnel option not ruled out yet KIM SHAW state parliament A TRUCK tunnel is still on the cards and is being seriously con- sidered as an option in the Govern- ment's preferred plans for the M4 East road project. This follows a recent media report that the plan for connector routes from the M4 East to the airport and Port Botany had been scratched in order to concentrate on expanding the M5. Communities in the Inner West have opposed the truck tunnel plan and have asked for the M4 East project to be dropped altogether. A British transport consultant for the government, Jim Steer, has also said the M4 East would create further gridlock, if it was not accompanied by higher road toll- ing or congestion tax to discour- age the build-up of traffic. But a spokesman for Premier Morris Iemma said the govern- ment's preferred plan would be released in a few months and would include consideration of the truck tunnel option. Shield back to the Oval SYDNEY club rugby's biggest day will go back to one of its tra- ditional homes with the 2008 Tooheys New Shute Shield grand final making a welcome return to Concord Oval. The six-team finals series will travel to all venues in Sydney. ''The venues for the 2008 Tooheys New Shute Shield Finals Series are a reflection of the geographical spread of the compe- tition, and the return to Concord Oval for the grand final is a move which has been wholeheartedly supported by the clubs,'' NSWRU chief executive officer Jim L'Estrange said. ''The Sydney Football Stadium has been a great host venue for our grand final in recent years, but due to the longer competition in 2008, our finals series clashes with the NRL.'' All seven Sydney club rugby grand finals will be played at Concord Oval, with first to fourth grades playing their deciders on September 20 and the colts the following day. www.mannequinsales.com.au 42 Sawyer Lane Artarmon 02 9439 5565 2063172i nst wk50 Mannequin Hire & Sales Displays, Shopfittings & Merchandising Sale & Hire of: Mannequins, Tailors Dummies, Shopfittings, Clothing Racks etc. Huge winter clearance!
