Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : August 13 2008
4 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, August 14, 2008 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Gift of sculpture to be unveiled PREMIER Morris Iemma will be in Five Dock on Friday to witness the unveiling of La Famiglia, the bronze sculpture given to the City of Canada Bay by the Basilicata region in Italy. The unveiling will take place in Stevensons Reserve, corner of Fairlight St and Ramsay Rd. La Famiglia has been designed and made by Antonio Masini, an artist from Canada Bay's Italian sister city, San Fele. It stands 7m high and 3m wide and comprises a mother, a father and small child to symbolise the thousands of migrants who started a new life in Australia. Antonio Masini's paintings are on display in Concord library, 60 Flavelle St, from August 19-31. Truck trial a triumph Campaigning B-double truck driver Col Booth at corner of Cosgrove Rd and Hume Highway, South Strathfield. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP177565 SHIREEN KHALIL RESIDENTS of two suburbs who have had their sleep disrupted by noisy trucks for eight years can now rest easily. The drivers of the B-double trucks who travel to and from the TNT site and other storage depots near the Enfield Marshalling Yards are happy too. Last week Strathfield Council finally came to a decision to allow B-double trucks to gain access to the Hume Highway via Cosgrove Rd between 7pm and 6am. B-double truck drivers such as Col Booth are pleased with the six- month trial and hope the route will continue after a new council is elected in September. ''We have gone through a merry- go-round trying to get council to listen so I'm happy to see it coming together,'' Mr Booth said. Since the 2000 Olympics, B-doubles could only exit Cosgrove Rd via Punchbowl Rd from 10pm to 6am, which saw them going through Belfield and Greenacre before heading back on to the Hume Highway. ''It was just ridiculous and a waste of our time because we weren't allowed to exit any earlier and we had to drive all the way to Punchbowl Rd, head through Juno Pde and make our way back to the highway and on to Centenary Drive,'' Mr Booth said. ''Not only did it add more time on to our trip but residents were also getting fed up with the noise.'' Mr Booth has been door- knocking residents at the Belfield end of Cosgrove Rd since the Olympics, when the restrictions were put into place for safety reasons. He said residents were happy to see the trucks out. ''Why put us through residential areas when we can get to the Hume Highway in 400m straight?'' Mr Booth said. Help discuss week's issues STRATHFIELD residents are in- vited to be part of the live studio television audience on next week's Q&A program on the ABC.
