Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : August 13 2008
14 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, August 14, 2008 SAVING THE PLANET Offload guzzlers KIM SHAW state parliament The fridge buy-back scheme in action. THE State Government wants your old fridge and will pay $35 to collect it. Old fridges guzzle more electricity and inflate household energy bills, Cli- mate Change Minister Ver- ity Firth said. If the fridge is older than 10 years and bigger than 250 litres (most fridges are), it is eligible for free collection and a $35 rebate if there are less than six stairs involved. If more than six stairs are involved, there is no rebate but the fridge will be col- lected for free. If more than 20 stairs are involved, a nominal collec- tion fee will be charged. ''Almost a third of Sydney's households have a second fridge,'' Ms Firth said. ''The collection goal of 19,000 second fridges will reduce NSW's greenhouse gas emissions by more than 152,000 tonnes per year -- the equivalent of taking more than 30,000 cars off the roads.'' Environment groups wel- comed the move but said it was the ''tip of the iceberg'' in reducing runaway en- ergy consumption. A recent report by energy consultants McKinsey & Company showed that household energy consump- tion could be reduced by 70 per cent without any re- duction in standards of liv- ing. Fridge Buyback is being rolled out in partnership with councils. Collected fridges will have their gases removed safely and their metal recycled. Visit www.fridge buyback.com.au or call 1800 708 401. Plans to clear the air won't work STATE Government plans to improve air quality and reduce car use are not working and will fail to reach 2016 targets, cabinet documents obtained by the Greens reveal. The government set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 2000 levels by 2025 and to reduce the number of kilometres travelled by private vehicles each day. But Greens MLC Lee Rhiannon said leaked cabinet documents contained dozens of modelling scenarios that showed these targets would not be reached. Meanwhile, Transport Minister John Watkins announced an increase in public transport use to levels expected in 2016. Almost 75 per cent of peak hour trips to the city are now by public transport. But Ms Rhiannon said this was not enough, given that the population was steadily increasing.
