INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, August 14, 2008 15 SAVING THE PLANET Strathfield South High School students Elisa Nguyen, Crystal Khoupraseuth, Cindy Bui and Nicole Kong get stuck into the garden. Outdoors haven STRATHFIELD South High School students have created a sanctuary for native plants and animals -- and have been rewarded for it.The school's student council started the south side sanctuary, an area behind the science labs and transformed it into a green corridor with advice from members of the Conservation Volunteers Australia. They entered the project in the HP Schools Future Program and were one of the five schools selected to receive a new computer from Hewlett-Packard to help them manage and monitor their environ- ment project. School Representative Council co- ordinator Nalan Shahettin said the whole school was behind the project, with 30 junior students regularly helping out with weeding and watering. Ms Shahettin said the new sanctuary was an asset to the school. ''It will create an educational outdoor classroom for the students,'' she said. ''Rather than taking our kids out on excursions we can identify plants and animals and test waters within the school.'' ''The response from the kids was enor- mous, they were so enthusiastic,'' she said. Strathfield Council provided the school with the tools and plants. all you need Over 50 Specialty Stores, FREE 3 hour shopper carparking 42 - 50 Railway Parade, Burwood.
