INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, August 14, 2008 17 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Fair go for charity LAUREN MURADA Zara Zuccolotto, 4, from Hurlstone Park, loves the goodies on offer at Santa Sabina's Fair Trade cafe. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP177553 YEAR 5 students at Santa Sabina tried their hands at being chefs, cooking cakes and treats for their Fair Trade cafe last Friday. Tea, coffee and chocolate was also on offer as students raised money for volunteer organis- ation Palms Australia. Religious education co- ordinator Marilyn Ahearn said it was important for children to realise they could make a dif- ference. ''Because they're living in the real world, they hear so many stories on the news about third world countries, so we're show- ing them to do something about it,'' she said. Year 5 parents were barris- ters for the day, making coffee from the Fair Trade Coffee Company. The students had been learn- ing about fair trade and how every worker should be paid fairly for their work. ''Hopefully it's going to make them very aware consumers in our society and get them to buy fair trade,'' Ms Ahearn said. The students also sold food, made posters, took photos and entertained guests. Student Masa Milunovic, who baked Anzac cookies for the cafe, said it was important to support charities. ''When we do support them, the poor people get paid and they can get better food and education,'' she said.
