Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : August 13 2008
32 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, August 14, 2008 Why are we still waiting? IT'S little wonder that many people in the Inner West have no faith in the State Government. On Monday a metropolitan newspaper reported that connector routes from the M4 East to the airport and Port Botany had been scratched to concentrate on expanding the M5. The paper quoted Premier Morris Iemma as saying that work on the M5 could remove the need for the M4-airport link. He was quoted as saying the Government was committed only to the M4-city project. Yet that same day, a spokesman for Premier Morris Iemma said a truck tunnel from the M4 East to Port Botany was still an option. Last year Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal promised the residents of the Inner West that a discussion paper on the preferred options for the M4 East would be released by Christmas. We're still waiting. The Premier's spokesman said this week, the Government's preferred plan would be released ''in a few months''. You can't get much vaguer than that. The whole things smells like a red herring. Election turf war Ashfield's returning officer is at Haberfield. I REFER to a letter from Julie Passas (Opinion, Aug 7) regarding the unfortunate location of the Ashfield local government elec- tion returning officer in Haberfield. I would like to point out that the returning officer is employed by the NSW Electoral Commission and it was a decision of that authority to locate the office in Haberfield, not the council. Like MrsPassasIamatalossto understand why the office of the returning officer was not located in the Ashfield CBD as it has been in past elections. With some vacant commercial premises in Liverpool Rd there seems little justification in moving the office elsewhere. It seems to be yet another example of government cost shift- ing, with the NSWEC charging council $204,000 for conducting the elections, an increase of 155 per cent over the cost of the last elections, with a significant re- duction in the level of service to the community. Ken Gainger General manager Ashfield Council Few choices I REFER to your letter Haberfield too far for voters to travel, (Aug 7). Unfortunately during our search for suitable premises for a local electoral office we were not spoilt by choice. A number of properties were of- fered, none of which were avail- able for short-term lease or large enough to accommo- date our staff, conduct postal and pre-poll voting for the public and with proper access for the dis- abled. There is no legislative re- quirement, nor the need for an electoral office to be located near a council build- ing. By our calculations the distance between the Ashfield Council adminis- tration building and the electoral office in Ramsay St is approximately 2.7km or a 37-minute walk. To put the situation into some context, some of our country offices are located hundreds of kilometres from their local council building without any detri- mental impact on the election services we provide. Assistance is available to voters through our website (www.elections.nsw.gov.au) or by calling the Elector Enquiry Centre on 1300 135 736 and polling places will operate in all wards on Saturday, September 13. CONDITIONS Cycling goes to the head YOUR recent story on pedal power was fascinating, but there's another aspect of cycling which doesn't get a lot of atten- tion -- especially by its very vocal enthusiasts. Down on the shared footpath along Iron Cove at the Haberfield Rowing Club, there are now no fewer than six signs -- several of them newly erected -- instructing cyclists to dismount and walk past a particularly dangerous narrow section. The pathway has recently been painted with diagonal pedestrian markings just to emphasise the point. I walk there every day on my way to work and as weekend recreation and have yet to see a single cyclist obey the request. I have seen several near misses, and a footpath rage incident which turned violent -- the errant pedestrian had strayed to the wrong side and foolishly re- sponded after being shouted at. In fact I've seen so many in- stances of uptight cyclists ferociously abusing pedestrians especially on the Iron Cove Bridge itself that I'm beginning to wonder about all the so-called health benefits of cycling. It may be good for the heart but not the head. I was a commuter cyclist myself for more than 20 years and only gave it up reluc- tantly. And just in time, appar- ently.
