INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, August 21, 2008 5 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Disappearing Ninja turtle teaches school a hard lesson ZILKA GROGAN Five Dock Public School Year 2 children Ben, Peter, Briiony and Daphne miss their turtle but still have their goldfish. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP181016 A long-necked turtle like Donatello. THE latest addition to Five Dock Public School's Year 2 Wollemi class spent his first day settling in with his new classmates. But when all the students had left for the day, Donatello, the long-necked turtle, decided to ex- plore his new surroundings. It was then that teacher Helen Rago noticed that her 13-year-old daughter's pet had waddled down the hall, jumped the stairs and disappeared. Mrs Rago said it was a common misconception that the reptiles were extraordinarily slow movers. ''People think turtles are really slow but they're really quite fast,'' she said. ''He was just very inquisitive.'' The students were sketching and photographing the turtle as part of a unit where they have studied mammals, reptiles and insects. Mrs Rago has brought several exotic family pets to class, includ- ing silkworms and a central bearded dragon. The turtle visited the class last Wednesday. On Thursday morn- ing, students in Kindergarten to Year 6 were involved in the search effort, using sticks to search for the turtle in the playground. The students continue to be worried about the welfare of the turtle and have been searching the playground at recess and lunch. ''The kids have asked me, 'Why aren't you crying or upset?','' Mrs Rago said. ''I've told them we have to be positive that it will be found, that it's just hibernating.'' Police appeal to find killer FIONA BRADY POLICE have appealed for the public's help in catching the killer of a Croydon mother-of-two, say- ing even the ''most minor piece of information'' could help their in- vestigation. The victim has been named as 56-year-old Joo Won Choi, a small business owner and mother of two adult sons. Mrs Choi's body was found in her home in Fitzroy St shortly before 3pm on August 12. She was last seen alive by her family at 9am that morning. Police said she had sustained head injuries and a post mortem had been carried out. A coroner will determine the cause of death. Burwood crime manager Det- Chief Insp Glenn Fitzgerald (pic- tured) said police were following a number of lines of inquiry. ''Anyone who knows anything or saw anything suspicious should give us a call,'' he said. ''Even the most minor piece of information could turn out to be useful.'' Anyone with information about the murder can call Burwood police on 9745 8499 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
