Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : August 20 2008
16 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, August 21, 2008 NEWS Auburn Mayor Le Lam is pushing for city status. Picture: JOHN APPLEYARD ~PP180863 Vote on city status DI BARTOK AUBURN Council residents will be voting for more than councillors at the September 13 local govern- ment election -- they will decide if they want Auburn to become a city. Voters will be asked to voteYesorNoinapoll where both sides will be presented, although coun- cillors are wanting the change to City of Auburn. Mayor Le Lam said Auburn had all the qualifi- cations to become a city. ''Auburn is an important inner western area of Sydney with a large and culturally diverse popu- lation," Cr Lam said. The For case argues that Auburn would receive more federal and state funding, business, tourists, confer- ences, events and employ- ment by becoming a city. The costs of changing signs will be spread over many years, with signs and stationery re-ordered only when supplies run out. The Against case argues that the name change may not have any impact on the quality of life in the area and that the benefits associ- ated with cityhood could attract some negative as- pects of growth and redevel- opment or have some other unforeseen consequences. It's also said that money spent on the name change could be used for com- munity programs. To read the full for and against cases, go to www.auburn.nsw.gov.au Proposal to Proclaim Auburn a City.
