28 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, August 21, 2008 Spoil dad and help kids hear Henry Hughes and Omar El-Sayed are asking you to surprise your dad with a gift that will assist hearing impaired children. THIS Father's Day two- year-old Rupert Hughes and preschoolers Henry Hughes and Omar El-Sayed are ask- ing you to surprise your dad with a gift that will assist children with hearing im- pairments just like them. The Shepherd Centre, a leading charity assisting deaf and hearing impaired children and babies, has released a range of low- priced Father's Day gifts. Proceeds from the sale will go towards The Shepherd Centre's programs to help deaf chil- dren including those with cochlear implants. The Father's Day gift range is part of the Aust- ralian Father of the Year fundraising campaign -- an annual search for the country's father of the year -- presented by the Aust- ralian Father's Day Coun- cil, The Shepherd Centre and Cumberland and Cour- ier community newspapers. Mother of four Shanti Hughes said The Shepherd Centre was helping two of her sons, four-year-old Henry and toddler Rupert, to prepare them for main- stream schooling. Henry has been attending The Shepherd Centre since he was almost two. Rupert started at eight weeks old. Mandy El-Sayed also has four children. Omar is their only child with a hearing impairment and has been attending The Shepherd Centre since he was one. He started there just two weeks after extensive hearing test- ing confirmed his hearing loss and he was fitted with hearing aids. Without his hearing aids he only has 40 per cent hearing. ''We entered a whole new world when he was diag- nosed. We knew no one who was deaf or hearing im- paired,'' Mrs El-Sayed said. Buying a Father's Day gift will help The Shepherd Centre continue to provide invaluable services to deaf and hearing impaired chil- dren such as Henry, Rupert and Omar. The Shepherd Centre has been providing an invaluable service to the community for more than 35 years and each year helps many children from NSW to learn to speak. Each gift has a fun slogan on it declaring I Love My Dad or that your dad is the Father of the Year. Gifts are priced from just $2 and are available until Father's Day on September 7.
