ASHFIELD town centre's con- troversial extreme makeover is about to get under way. It will begin with next month's demolition of the for- mer Westpac Bank building at 258 Liverpool Rd to make way for the new Ashfield Civic Centre. Already an adjacent court- yard has been sealed off and council staff will be removing trees and park furniture, and cutting off the area's water and electricity supplies in prep- aration for the demolition. ''We will endeavour to mini- mise noise disturbances to council's customers and staff throughout the process, and apologise for any inconvenience caused during these works,'' Ashfield Council general man- ager Ken Gainger said. The Westpac branch has already moved to new premises in Ashfield Mall. Its former home will be the location of the new $12.3 million civic centre, housing a library, customer service centre and community meeting rooms. Construction is expected to start in February 2009 -- much to the delight of council staff. The existing administration headquarters are so cramped and outdated, they've been nick- named the ''chicken coop''. For the latest on the civic centre redevelopment, phone the council on 9716 1800 or visit www.ashfield.nsw.gov.au Today Showers. Top Temp: 17C Friday A few showers.
