4 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, August 28, 2008 MB NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Life's best in Canada Bay Chris Braga loves the welcoming nature of Ashfield. Picture: BRENT McGILVARY FIONA BRADY Jenny Nicholls and grandson Reuben have seen changes in Rhodes over the years. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP183285 CANADA Bay residents should count yourselves lucky. According to a new report pub- lished last week, your local gov- ernment area has the best quality of life in the Inner West. The Bankwest quality of life index rated the country's 590 coun- cil areas by comparing criteria such as employment, health, edu- cation, earnings, home ownership, crime rates, volunteering and internet access. Canada Bay topped the local rankings with a respectable 121. Our other LGAs didn't fare quite so well. Strathfield came in mid- way through the table at 310th, while Ashfield was ranked a disap- pointing 406th. Burwood languished even further down the list at 472. The data used to compile the index was gathered from various sources including the Bureau of Statistics and the Tax Office. Jenny Nicholls, 69 and her husband Ian, 71, have lived in Rhodes (in Canada Bay ) since 1963. Jenny is a retired secretary and her husband is an engineer. ''Rhodes has changed so much in the last 10 years but a lot of the things we liked about it are still here. We have plenty of open space with the Olympic site around us and we're near the water. We also have good local facili- ties like a decent shopping centre and train, bus and ferry services. Crime levels aren't too high in this area and we used to have a pretty good Neighbourhood Watch -- though that's gone by the way- side recently. I suppose one of the only bug- bears of residents here would be traffic. Population will soar with the clean-up and development on the western side of the peninsula and the roads infrastructure won't cope. As for volunteering, I think people in Canada Bay are pretty active. I've been a volunteer with Meals on Wheels since 1972 and also worked for the Concord Com- munity Hostel. All in all, we've been very happy in this area.'' James Sun, 21 has lived in Strathfield since 1999. He lives at home with his parents and 23-year- old sister. James is a hospitality student at UTS. He also works part-time at his parents' restaurant Arisun Chinese in Strathfield and at the Novotel, Darling Harbour. ''Strathfield is really convenient and very central, which is excel- lent, especially for young people. Wherever I want to go, it's only a maximum of a half-hour's drive in any direction. It's quite a built-up area and it doesn't have very much green space around it, but that might bother the older generation more than it does me.
