Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : August 27 2008
MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, August 28, 2008 33 STREETVIEW Beating the cost squeeze Connie D'Amico Photini Christoforou Erden Katri Suraj Malakar Mary Fakher With rising interest rates and the increase in petrol and food prices, lots of families are starting to feel the squeeze. The Inner-West Weekly hit the streets of Croydon to ask locals if they'd started to cut back on their spending. Connie D'Amico, of Enfield: I've been doing little things like getting takeaway less and watching my spending more. I'd think twice before buying certain items, such as clothes. With petrol, I'm lucky I don't drive to work anyway but my kids are catching the bus more. Photini Christoforou, of Ramsgate Beach: The only thing I would do is get my petrol vouchers to get 4c discount on Tuesdays. You don't waste petrol any more -- and maybe you wouldn't do a Saturday or Sunday drive. Erden Katri, of Avalon: Basically, I watch going out and I'm not eating out as often. Less extravagant objects essen- tially. I'm probably buying cheaper wine now. The changes are coming in small increments and as the interest rates and fuel prices go up, the increments get bigger and bigger. Suraj Malakar, of Croydon: I'm not going out that much and I only buy what I need -- the essentials. I used to go the movies every week but I haven't been going at all really. Mary Fakher, of Croydon: Everything is too expensive. I've changed my habits, of course. I drive less to save on petrol. I tell my children that they should look after their money for the future, so they can afford to buy a house.
