Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : August 27 2008
34 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, August 28, 2008 MB One's joy just grief to another LIKE it or lump -- balloon bans are set to become widespread. At least until someone comes up with a biodegradable one -- and one that breaks down faster than anything else known to mankind. Like the long-lost days of confetti in churches, where rice- throwing has become the norm, the humble helium party balloon is now considered evil in environmental terms. It's right up there with the scourge of plastic shopping bags, Styrofoam cups and fishing lines as the most inconsiderate to the ecology of our seas. So who can really blame Canada Bay Council for taking the moral high ground, particularly in these heightened eco-friendly times? Yes, it's sad to see the loss of the balloon. Just like it was sad when governments banned backyard firecrackers. But, like the shooting stars of old, helium balloons are known to fly higher than many birds when they escape the clutches of kiddies in an instant. And that's when the problems for our wildlife begin. Party poopers? Yes. Green warriors? Yes, indeed. Blocked driveways Our report on August 7 about blocked driveways. I SYMPATHISE with the residents of George St, Strathfield North ''Residents Driven Mad'', IWW, August 7). Itisahappydayatmyhousein Wellbank St if we are allowed into our driveway of an afternoon. Many inconsiderate people be- lieve that it is their given right to park blatantly across or on not only my driveway but that of my neighbours while they sip on a latte or duck into a shop, not caring that we must leave our cars around the corner or that other motorists abuse us when we try to slowly manoeuvre our cars into the tight driveways. When the rangers are called, they never show up or it is too late. How can Canada Bay Council say that they will not issue park- ing permits to residents when there is off-street parking? This off-street parking does NOT exist for us ratepaying resi- dents. Maybe council can show us where it is? Sonia Serra Concord ALP failure THE community consultation at the Summer Hill Community Centre sounded very good on paper: the chance for local resi- dents to engage in a Q&A session with the developers of the flour mills. In practice, however, the meeting turned out to be an ALP-sponsored example of how not to run a consultation session. Aside from extremely poor logistical planning, which saw many residents unable to get ac- cess to the meeting room due to overcrowding (a large part of the already seated audience appear- ing to be the ALP faithful), the inability of residents to have even themostbasicofquestions answered was glaringly apparent. Indeed, we all appeared to be there to receive a warm and fuzzy group hug from the developer whose only success on the day appears to be that he raised com- munity scepticism of the project by at least three more notches. What was also disappoint- ing was the way in which members of the ALP treated those trying to ask quite obvious and pertinent ques- tions. In one instance, an answer pro- vided by an interjecting ALP afficionado was delivered with such anger and force that it really made most of us wonder why we turned up at all. The common opinion afterwards: a complete failure. I just hope that when it comes time for council to discuss the matter properly, with the developer and the community, that the proceed- ings are managed a lot better. CONDITIONS Squalid street WHERE is Caroline Stott? I am informed that local councillor Caroline Stott lives on my street. I have to question whether that is true. For weeks at a time, dumped furniture and unsightly rubbish clogs the gutters. And let's not mention abandoned shopping trolleys. You'd think that the local councillor would do some- thing about the mess in her street, but Ms Stott does not. I judge politicians by their actions. This one can't even man- age her own street so why should I think that she'd be good for Ashfield? Luke Clarke Ashfield Sharing is bad ANTHONY Albanese, Minister for Aircraft Noise Sharing, ''shares'' the same aberrant reasoning as predecessors in giv- ing ''noise sharing'' a positive spin. Can one imagine the same ''shar- ing'' spin given to factory, car and high voltage emissions, global warming, asbestos, nuclear power and, from a medical per- spective, cigarette smoke, drugs, AIDS, etc. Aircraft noise sharing isn't a good thing, with the elite sadly missing out. It would be more appropriate and aid solutions if aircraft pollution and noise were given descriptions fitting their physical and health burden, not the PG and sugar- coated versions political-private partnerships offer when out- comes are harmful.
