Steve Sladek 02 9737 8855 Resumes to email@example.com This week, I'm turning my column over to "Anonymous", who did supply her full name when she sent in this novel idea. "I love reading your articles in the local paper. I have enough job stories myself to write books. Anyway, I can't understand why employers conduct interviews when in the end, they end up hiring someone from inside their organisation. I have taken time off work (unpaid time), paid parking fees, wasted petrol and the time it takes to tell yet another stranger my life story only to find out from my [recruitment] agent that the employer hired an insider. At first I thought it may have been the agent's excuse to me, but considering the rapport I have with these specific agents, there's no reason they would give me a fake reason for failing the interview. I'm not fussed about missing out on some of the jobs but I am annoyed about wasting my time and money for an interview where employers were just 'fishing' the candidate market. And let's not forget the Public Service, where they always have someone in editor of careerone ask Kate Interesting idea mind but just advertise the roles to look as though they are not biased. I strongly suggest that if candidates were paid by the employer to attend the interview, employers would be more professional and careful about wasting people's time. After all, the employer is getting paid while conducting the interview, so why is their time more important than the candidate's?" Well Anon, thanks for that suggestion. I don't predict a change any time soon but we have at least run your idea up the flag pole. To submit a question or comment visit www.careerone.com.au and click on the Ask Kate link.
