MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, September 4, 2008 11 NEWS Station officer Jim Stephen puts officers through a training drill at Burwood fire station. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP185903 MP feels the heat FIONA BRADY BURWOOD firefighters say they are disappointed in Strathfield State Labor MP Virginia Judge's response to their campaign against the Iemma Government's 2.5 per cent cap on public sector wages. A Burwood fire station union delegate who met Ms Judge last month said firefighters needed a payrise of at least 4 per cent to keep pace with inflation. ''A 4 per cent rise would just mean that we could pay our bills and keep up with our mortgage repayments,'' firefighter Michael Nairn said. He said most Burwood firefighters had to have second jobs to make ends meet. The firefighters are also lobbying for the State Gov- ernment to withdraw award changes they say will threaten community safety and diminish working con- ditions. One proposed change would involve closing stations during a shift if there were unexpected crew shortages rather than call- ing in another worker on overtime. Ms Judge told the Inner- West Weekly she had made ''several, very strong rep- resentations'' to Emergency Services Minister Nathan Rees on behalf of firefighters. ''The minister assured me there would be no compro- mise to public safety and no permanent closure of fire stations,'' she said. She would not be drawn on the union's wage claim, saying the matter was cur- rently under arbitration. Open: 7 days, Mon-Fri 8.30am-8:00pm, Sat-Sun 9.00am-6:00pm.
