MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, September 4, 2008 47 Warped decking The deck is complete. Timber decking is a wonderful feature for any outdoor entertainment area. Installing decking boards is relatively simple. However the installation can be more difficult when the timber decking lengths are bent and warped. But here's a simple solution. Step 1: Fix spacing at one end. Lay the timber decking board on to the decking frame next to the most recently-laid decking board. If the new board is warped, lay it so it bends away from the most recently-laid board. At one end, fix a nail into position between the two decking lengths. This sets the spacing between the two boards. Step 2: Fix spacing down the length. At the mid-point of the new timber decking board fix another nail into position between the two decking lengths. This sets the spacing. Step 3: Pre-drill holes to avoid splitting. Decking boards can split when nailing the board to the decking frame. To avoid this, drill holes into the board before nailing. The holes should be slightly thinner than the thickness of the decking nails. Step 4: Fix decking boards using decking nails. Insert decking nails into the pre-drilled holes and hammer into position. Repeat this process up the full length of the board. Step 5: Use a chisel to lever the board into place. As you work down the length of board, the warping will become more pronounced. Using a chisel, lever the decking board across to lessen the space and match your desired spacing. Fix the board into position with a nail. Step 6: Once fixed into place, the warp will not be recognisable. The deck is complete -- you're ready to entertain.
