Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : September 10 2008
MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, September 11, 2008 57 ARTS listenup STEVE MOFFATT GERMAN counter-tenor Andreas Scholl possesses one of the truly great voices of the 21st century and his ability to interpret a song is unmatched. A regular visitor to Australia, he has wowed audiences with his Vivaldi and Handel recitals and in 2006, despite a head cold, his program of Elizabethan songs and folk tunes was a knockout. Now Harmonia Mundi has released a CD of Scholl, lutenist Julian Behr and Concerto di Viole playing a selection of songs and instrumentals by John Dowland and his contemporaries. Crystal Tears is a fine set of mainly melancholic songs, given the occasional lift as in William Byrd's Though Amaryllis dance in green and Scholl's jaunty whistled line in John Bennet's Venus' birds whose mournful tunes, but the mood in general sums up an age when it was fashionable to be tragic and world-weary. Crystal Tears (HMC 901993) is distributed by Select and comes with an interesting DVD about the making of it. NOT a lot of new music is being written for harpsichord these days so it is little wonder that someone would come up with the idea of transcribing J.S. Bach's violin sonatas and partitas for the keyboard instrument. That someone is Winsome Evans, an associate professor at Sydney Uni's music department and a performing musician with just about every orchestra, ensemble and renaissance group worth its salt in Sydney. There's nothing new about the idea -- Bach himself did the same with Vivaldi's and other composers' works -- and the resulting double CD does give some familiar pieces a new dimension. Some work better than others, as you would expect. The long, slow double-stopped movements, like the Adagio from Sonata No 3, sound a little thin but Evans fills things out nicely with some tasteful ornamentation. And the famous chaconne from Partita No 2 works surprisingly well. Recording is excellent, almost intimate, and Evans own notes make for interesting reading. For information and details go to www.harmonies.com ADELAIDE composer Graeme Koehne harks back to different eras in the latest of the ABC's Australian Composers Series featuring the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra under Richard Mills. The title work, Tivoli Dances, evokes wartime vaudeville and dance halls when overpaid, oversexed American servicemen were over here and when the popular swing music of Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman held sway. In contrast the Salvos, as ever, were part of the city soundscape with their brass bands and tambourines pumping out hymns and they get a tribute here. Call it post-modernism or sheer nostalgia for a previous era, Koehne's work is affectionate and accessible, if a little light on substance. The strange Protestant religious sect the Shakers -- famous for their plain but beautiful furniture and simple dance music -- inspired the second work on this CD and the three pieces bring to mind the work of Aaron Copland. The more sophisticated world of the 1920s and '30s is recalled in Palm Court Suite where jazz and blues meet salon music, and Koehne pays a brief tribute to J.S. Bach in the last track. All in all this is a strange collection of music which should appeal to a wide audience. On the ABC Classics label it retails for $30.95.
