MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, September 18, 2008 5 COUNCIL ELECTIONS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Cassidy happy with result FIONA BRADY Ashfield's Ted Cassidy is confident of being re-elected. TED Cassidy believes he will fall just short of a double quota after he performed well at the polls in Ashfield. The independent councillor and incumbent Mayor said he was ''very, very pleased''. ''It is an endorsement of the policies I put in my manifesto,'' he said. ''I don't think anyone could not take notice of what the voters have said.'' Cr Cassidy would not be drawn on whether he would win the mayorship, saying it was too early too speculate. About 2000 votes in each ward are yet to be counted and several wards look too close to call. In particular, the other two spots in Ted Cassidy's North East ward are on a knife-edge with Labor's Lucille McKenna and the Green's Lyall Kennedy both on 19 per cent of the vote and the Liberal's Tom Watson on 18 per cent. Independent councillors Monica Wangmann and Caroline Stott both polled well on first preferences as did Labor's Mark Drury and Jeanette Wang. One councillor who looks like retaining his seat comfortably is Marc Rerceretnam who was hold- ing 28 per cent of the vote with 1590 votes still to be counted in South ward. ''We worked extremely hard and we believe residents have a message for the major parties, particularly the Liberal and the Labor parties,'' he said. Final results are expected on Thursday. Barron has no regrets SHIREEN KHALIL NDEPENDENT Strathfield coun- cillor Paul Barron has no regrets quitting the ALP despite the Lib- erals, Labor and an independent securing more primary votes. ''At this stage it looks like I am in and I'm definitely happy about that and we are now waiting for pre-polling votes, which looks like a toss between the Liberals and the Labor Parties,'' the former mayor said. ''I have no regrets leaving the Labor Party and actually the re- sults show how much they have gone down in the Strathfield area,'' he said. Cr Barron said he was happy with the direction of the results and would move on to helping residents again. ''I will be working hard again over the next four years to serve the residents of Strathfield and continue to challenge the new planning laws,'' he said. Independent candidate Danny Lim looks like securing a seat on the council. Cr Barron said: ''He is certainly a local character and it's one thing to jump up and down on the corner of the street and another thing to make real decisions that affect the local people of Strathfield so it will be very interesting indeed.'' Mr Lim said this week he was unsure if he would remain on the council if elected. Liberal candidate Bill Carney and the ALP's Keith Kwon, also romped home. back seat Bay Incumbent Burwood mayor John Faker of the ALP has so far polled more than double his Liberal counterpart, John Sidoti, with about 5000 votes yet to be tallied. The Liberal and Labor parties appear to have secured at least two spots each on the council. An overwhelming majority of residents voted to directly elect their mayor in 2012. With 5300 votes remaining, 63 per cent favoured the new system. At Ashfield, incumbent Mayor Ted Cassidy has polled strongest to date. But, as voting continues, no candidates have yet reached the quota to win a seat on first preferences. At Strathfield, the ALP has polled strongest with 4557 of the 19,641 votes secured so far, ensur- ing Cr Keith Kwon returns. Liberal Bill Carney will also return, with 3960 votes so far. Independent Danny Lim has 1811 votes and incumbent Labor- turned-independent Mayor Paul Barron has 1092 votes. There are 5000 votes yet to be tallied. MASSIVE SAVINGS!!!
