Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : September 24 2008
2 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, September 25, 2008 Is this the unkindest cut of all? FIONA BRADY MENTAL illness sufferers tak- ing part in a successful rehabili- tation work program in the Inner West have had their wages slashed to $9 an hour. Before the Sydney South West Area Health Service introduced the cuts, most participants earned upwards of $13 per hour. The scheme, which is run from Croydon Community Health Centre's living skills unit, finds people with mental illness part-time work with lo- cal firms and industry partners, such as Ashfield Council. A health service spokes- woman said the lower pay rate would encourage participants to return mainstream jobs. ''Higher rates of reimburse- ment can act as a barrier to taking the next step to competi- tive employment and may block opportunities for other people with a mental illness to experi- ence and learn work skills,'' she said. ''The rate (of pay) was chosen to ensure people in the program would be encouraged to move forward into new employment opportunities and give more training opportunities for other people with a mental illness.'' That view is not shared by Kerin O'Halloran, whose daugh- ter has benefited from the program. Ms O'Halloran said the program had previously been promoted as ''real work in the real world for real wages''. ''Although it may not sound like a lot of money, the drop in wages will make a big differ- ence,'' she said. ''It also sends out a message that they are not equal or worth the same pay as co-workers. ''The reality is, some people take a long time to redevelop confidence and rebuild their life, and rely on this supported program for a long time. ''The evidence shows many people on the program success- fully returned to work. But when you push people too fast, they suffer a relapse,'' she said. ''Having financial stress will not help their recovery.''
