Hand-picked from lolly jar SHIREEN KHALIL New mayor Keith Kwon A DIP into the lolly jar finally decided the mayoral position at Strathfield Council for the next 12 months. The newly-elected council got together last Thursday to vote in the mayor and deputy mayor. Labor Cr Keith Kwon and Liberal Cr Tony Maroun re- ceived equal votes for mayor, and Cr Kwon said he was ex- pecting independent Cr Danny Lim to vote for him. However Cr Lim nominated himself and when he failed to get the support of other council- lors, the votes remained at three each and the mayoral position was in the hands of the lolly jar. Cr Kwon's name was chosen. ''I am really humble and happy for the opportunity to serve the community and to use my endeavours to fulfil the mayoral duty at Strathfield,'' Cr Kwon said. The councillors then moved to vote for a deputy. The three Labor councillors supported new councillor Hope Brett-Bowen (including her- self), while two Liberals sup- ported independent Cr Barron (including himself). After an- other tie and another lolly-jar call, public officer Neale Redman named Cr Brett-Bowen as deputy. While resi- dents and councillors made their way outside the packed meeting, Cr Lim threw a few negative words at the new mayor as he approached him. Cr Lim referred to allegations made by Cr Barron earlier this year that Strathfield State Labor MP Virginia Judge helped deliver Cr Kwon the lead ALP position on the council. Cr Lim referred to him as the former mayor's ''lap-dog''. Cr Kwon later denied he had a conversation with Cr Lim at that time but said he had pre- viously given Cr Lim options and didn't think he was pleased with them. ''I respect his decision and I expect in return Cr Lim to respect my decision too,'' Cr Kwon said. ''I believe Cr Lim's heart is in the right place and I look forward to his contribution in improving Strathfield Coun- cil.'' www.napf.com.au SUMMER HILL CNR PARRAMATTA RD & DOVER ST 9799 9555 DOVER ST.
