4 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, October 2, 2008 MB NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au V8 supercar racing: Will it Premier Nathan Rees with V8 Supercar drivers at Monday's announcement. Picture: Phil Blatch ~PP198077 FOR IN pole position for the race's supporters is Premier Nathan Rees, who claims the Sydney Olympic Park event will contrib- ute more than $100 million to the NSW economy. At the press launch on Monday Mr Rees declared the Sydney 400 will attract more than 70,000 people and an extra 15,000 visitors from overseas and interstate. ''The race series will contribute between $100 and $110 million to the state's economy and will at- tract more than $20 million worth of national and extensive inter- national media coverage each year, using the best city in the world as a backdrop,'' he said. The Premier said there'd be other ''terrific spin-offs'' such as the creation of more than 110 full- time-equivalent jobs and 75 NSW apprenticeships. ''This is going to be a high- octane, low-impact, good-fun event which will put Sydney front and centre of the world motor-racing map and put Sydney front and centre once again on the inter- national event stage.'' Race organisers have vowed that there will be a ''minimal'' negative impact on the environ- ment. For every tree that is removed, (about 140), they say they will plant three, and the race cars will run on 85 per cent ethanol fuel. They have also stated that the event will have ''absolutely no impact'' on the endangered green and gold bell frogs. MP: Moaners move! Have your say Comment on this story at www.innerwestweekly.com.au RESIDENTS who live within view of major street-car races can ''rent out their properties'' if they don't like the noise, State Devel- opment Minister Ian MacDonald told parliament during a debate on the V8 Supercar race planned for Sydney Olympic Park. Mr MacDonald said 6000 resi- dents in Surfers Paradise who didn't love the Indy car races simply rented out their homes whenever the races were held. The Greens and the Opposition oppose the government plans for a V8 Supercar race at Homebush. Mr MacDonald said race organ- isers did not want to use Eastern Creek as it was built for motor- bikes and had access problems. He told parliament that some $25 million would be offered by government to subsidise the event. But Greens and Coalition MLCs argued the money would better be spent upgrading Eastern Creek as a permanent venue, rather than committing to a dis- ruptive and expensive set-up and take-down process for 10 weeks each year at Homebush Bay. The event could also lose millions, based on the track re- cord of similar events held else- where, Greens MLCs argued. Auburn, Ryde and Parramatta Councils had expressed concerns and so had the Sydney Olympic Park Authority, Auburn MP Barbara Perry and ALP candidate for Ryde Nicole Campbell, Greens MLCs told parliament.
