MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, October 2, 2008 5 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au be a blessing or a curse? Newington residents Michael Lewis and Nicole Youl protest. Picture: Phil Blatch ~PP198078 AGAINST REVVING up against the proposal are local residents, environmental groups and the State Opposition. Newington resident Tom Bohan is a member of the Save Olympic Park: No V8 Racing group who heckled Monday's press launch with shouts of ''Shame!'' He said the Sydney 400 would cause serious disruption to local residents, claiming surrounding suburbs would face noise pollution, road closures and damage to the park which was ''designed for people, not machines''. He was also critical of taxpayers' money being used to fund the project. ''Our organisation believes it is a damning indictment of the new Premier Nathan Rees, with the state of NSW, that his first major project approval is one which is such a massive financial gamble,'' he said. Another Newington resident Nicole Youl, who attended the protest, said she was a V8 fan. ''But not here,'' she said. The Total Environment Centre's direc- tor Jeff Angel described the proposal as ''environmentally damaging''. ''The proposed event will result in the loss of hundreds of native trees, subject surrounding suburbs to severe noise and traffic impacts and destroy years of work in urban renewal and environmental restoration at Sydney Olympic Park,'' he said. Opposition leader Barry O'Farrell said the V8 race should be at Eastern Creek and the government funding should be spent on upgrades at that track. V8s will roar around the central precinct of Sydney Olympic Park next year. Green light for cars THE controversial V8 Supercar race through Sydney Olympic Park has been given the green light. At a press conference on Monday, Premier Nathan Rees announced the first race around the 3.4km circuit will be held next year from December 4 to 6. The race contract has been awarded for five years and it is understood it will cost taxpayers about $30 million. The announcement has prompted the formation of the Save Olympic Park: No V8 Racing group, whose members were strident in their opposition on Monday. Greens and Coalition MPs have also spoken out against the move. Premier Nathan Rees was supported by V8 Supercar drivers, including the legendary Mark Skaife.
