Tell us online at www.innerwestweekly.com.au THERE were cheers from a packed gallery when Ashfield Council rejected the proposal for the Italian bilingual school on the Yasmar Estate in Haberfield. After a mammoth 21/2-hour de- bate last Tuesday night, council- lors followed the recommendation of their council officers and voted to refuse Co.As.It's development application on the grounds of bulk and scale, heritage considerations and traffic, parking and safety issues. The Italian organisation had wanted to demolish the existing juvenile detention centre build- ings and prison wall and build a school for 240 primary students. But the proposals faced ve- hement opposition, both from lo- cal residents who objected to the scale of the development, and from local heritage groups who feared it might block any chance of a heritage future for Yasmar. But Co.As.It. is not giving up without a fight. The Italian organisation, which holds a 20-year lease from the Lands Department to operate on the site, has described the rejection as a ''temporary set- back'' and says it will ''exhaust every reasonable avenue'' to get the school built. Those avenues could include asking the council to review its determination, lodging an appeal with the Land and Environment Court or appealing to Planning Minister Kristina Keneally. Several sides to the story. Read the community debate: Page 4
