Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : July 16th 2009
48 INNER WEST COURIER, Thursday, July 16, 2009 MB ENTERTAINMENT listenup STEVE MOFFATT IF you like country music with a bit of edge and the dark worlds of Nick Cave or Tom Waites chances are you'll enjoy Melbourne four-piece The Wildes' Ballad of a Young Married Man (TW 102 9321481036724). I've been listening to this CD of all-original material for a couple of weeks now and I'm finding more to like with each spin. Vocalist Lachlan Bryant delivers his lines about love, death and desertion with just the right sardonic twist. The four-piece - Bryant and Andrew Wrigglesworth, guitars, Matt Duniam, drums, and Shaun Reyan, bass - are joined by a few guests but most of the tracks are tightly produced from their live sets. Many of these songs will stay in your head. Picks for me are Nothing (the most Cave-like of the songs), If I've Done You Wrong (I'm Not Sorry) and the title track about someone being shot in the chest - couldn't happen in Melbourne ... Released by Select Global it is distributed by Select www.savd.com.au MENDELSSOHN had been conducting a lot of Bach's great choral works when he was composing Paulus so it is not surprising that the old master's influence should shine through. In fact the young composer filched whole choruses from the St Matthew Passion, but this splendid and impressive oratorio is very much Mendelssohn's own and is every bit as good as its better known brother Elijah. The Chandos label continues its tribute to the late conductor Richard Hickox by releasing his recent recording of Paulus with the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales with an impressive line-up of soloists including our own Peter Coleman-Wright. This is an excellent recording in every way and Hickox is at his best directing traffic in this glorious meeting of the Baroque and the Romantic. Paulus (CHAN10516) is distributed by Select at www.savd.com.au and is available at all good music stores. ''LIVING treasure'' Peter Sculthorpe is our best-known classical composer and his influence on Australian music and musicians is immeasurable. Now Tall Poppies has released the third in its brilliant string quartets series featuring the Goldner Quartet and recorded in the presence of the composer. This latest release (TP206) features four works, quartets 14-17, and brings us up to the present day. I was lucky enough to hear the premiere of the 16th by the Tokyo Quartet in Musica Viva's 2005 season. Commissioned by human rights lawyer Julian Burnside, it is a powerful and moving indictment against the Howard government's policy on asylum seekers, inspired by detainees' letters. Sculthorpe's love of Aboriginal chants, native bird calls and South-East Asian music are all in evidence in the other works, as is his earlier debt to European music. He even pays tribute to Beethoven in his latest quartet, the 17th - a change of heart from his declaration in 1967 ''I never want to hear another note of Beethoven in my life''. The Goldners - Dene Olding and Dimity Hall, violins, Irina Morozova, viola, and Julian Smiles, cello - are superb. Should get an ARIA if there's any justice. Priced at $24.95, it's available at fine music stores or at www.tallpoppies.net TIMED to coincide with the publication of Sonia Orchard's book The Virtuoso, ABC Classics has released a rare historical recording by the largely-forgotten Australian pianist Noel Mewton-Wood. Born in Melbourne, Mewton- Wood was a child prodigy but made his mark in Britain in the 1940s and '50s. A friend of Michael Tippett, Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, who sings on the last track of this album, the pianist was described by Sir Thomas Beecham as ''the best talent I've discovered in the British empire for years''. Mewton-Wood's was a short and ultimately tragic life. He felt responsible for the death of a friend and killed himself by drinking prussic acid at the age of 31. Sonia Orchard's novel is told through the eyes of a narrator and lover of Mewton- Wood and is set at a time when homosexuality, although prevalent in English artistic circles, was still illegal and kept secret. The tracks on the CD are pretty good quality, considering their age. There are excerpts from four concertos - Chopin's No.1, Schumann, Tchaikovsky's No.1 and Beethoven's No.3 - as well as an outstanding performance of the first movement of Arthur Bliss's concerto. Mewton-Hall never recorded with top-flight orchestras, but you can get an idea of his extraordinary power and command from these recordings. His dazzling fingerwork is displayed in a wartime radio recording of Weber's Moto perpetuo. He also composed, was a demon chess player and could recite whole chunks of Gibbons' Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. The Virtuoso is available at ABC shops. RRP $30.95.
